Description of the Assignment
– Game Designers often struggle with getting their players involved into the game, especially on an emotional level.
For example: caring for the main character’s struggles, feeling attached to a car in a race game, or a monster in a monster hunting game, or simply the emotions from playing with a friend.
This emotional attachment can be found in almost any successful game. Writing a good story is one thing but creating a game that makes the player care for the content is another.
Many games have successfully accomplished creating an emotional attachment with the player. For example: Pokémon succeeded in getting their players to care for the Pokémon they catch, while Gran Turismo succeeded in making the player emotionally invested in their car.
The challenge is knowing how those games succeeded, and why. There are many sources available that can help designers through this question, but just going through the sources does not automatically mean that a game designer will succeed.
Ideally through this project, I can learn something on how to make their games emotionally involving to the player, without having to become a professional writer.
Game Description:
– The game will play in the time after NieR: Automata. 2B and 9S find a new planet with humans, but these humans are still in medieval times. The game is a 3D explorative top-down experience filled with puzzles and choices for the players to solve and make.
2B and 9S will be the player characters. 2B has a virus that turns Androids mad and out of control. 9S is a hacker who can control the virus. While 2B is near 9S, 9S keeps the virus in 2B under control, but when 2B moves too far away from 9S the virus attacks her and she will lose control over time. 2B will become gradually harder to control as the virus takes over until control is completely lost. When 9S gets back in range of 2B, she will slowly calm down again.
Through self-control, the player must solve puzzles and make choices and face the consequences of their choices.
